Trigger Point Injections & Nerve Block Injections

Trigger Point Injection

A trigger point injection is a medical procedure used to treat muscle pain and discomfort caused by trigger points—tight knots of muscle that can cause pain, stiffness, and referred pain in other areas of the body. During the injection, a healthcare provider inserts a needle directly into the trigger point and may inject a local anesthetic, corticosteroid, or saline solution.

The goal is to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility in the affected muscle. This treatment is often used for conditions like fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, and other muscle-related issues. The procedure is typically quick and can provide immediate relief for some patients, though multiple sessions may be necessary for optimal results.

Nerve Block Injection

A nerve block injection is a medical procedure used to temporarily interrupt the transmission of pain signals along a specific nerve or group of nerves. This is achieved by injecting a local anesthetic, sometimes combined with a steroid, directly around the nerve or into a specific area. Nerve blocks are commonly used for various reasons, including:

  1. Pain Management: They help manage acute or chronic pain conditions, such as back pain, joint pain, or neuropathic pain.
  2. Surgical Procedures: Nerve blocks can provide anesthesia for certain surgeries, reducing the need for general anesthesia.
  3. Diagnostic Purposes: They can help identify the source of pain by determining whether pain relief occurs after the block.

The effects of a nerve block can last from a few hours to several days, depending on the medication used and the specific nerve targeted. While generally safe, potential risks include infection, bleeding, and temporary numbness or weakness in the affected area.
